When we reflect on what makes the Vineyard stand out above all other places, the answers often vary but the theme is very much the same. Some are attracted to the simple joy of
living on the edge of the sea; others enjoy the intimacy of a small island
community, but for most everyone, it is the undeniable beauty of this fragile
piece of land that retains a hold on us.
No matter the draw, we all need to be reminded from time to time that we
cannot take it for granted. Preserving this
special place requires our collective appreciation of its fragility.
As more and more
people continue to discover why we so admire this place, the pressure on our natural
and community resources continue to grow.
Luckily, the Island is blessed with a population that truly understands
what makes this a haven for all that live or visit here. All across the Island there are dedicated
charitable agencies, organizations, partnerships and concerned citizens working
tirelessly to protect the unique character of the Island. However, much work lies ahead. Ironically, the Island's exploding popularity
is bringing to fore some of the greatest challenges that the Vineyard has ever
faced.
The
Farm Neck Foundation was formed as our way to give back to our community and to
help all those who are working on our behalf to protect all the special
qualities of the Island. For those of us
who still find Martha's Vineyard a place like no other, giving together to help
preserve, protect and promote what brought us here in the first place is not so
much charity as just common sense.
We thank you for
your generosity in the past and hope you can support the work of the Foundation
again this year. Collectively, we have
been able to make a real difference.
